Closely related homeopathic preparation: Cortisonum (Cortisone, the 11-keto analogue). Trade names of the allopathic drug include Cortef, Solu-Cortef (sodium succinate), and numerous topical creams.

Modern MM
A modern drug remedy whose sphere of action mirrors the toxicology of glucocorticoid excess and withdrawal: endocrine/adrenal axis, connective tissue and skin (atrophy, fragility, delayed healing), fluid balance (sodium/water retention, oedema), inflammatory and allergic states, joints, and the iatrogenic suppressed-steroid constitution. Used clinically chiefly to address the after-effects and dependency arising from suppressive corticosteroid therapy. There is no Hahnemannian proving establishing a characteristic mental/general symptom picture.

Key symptoms

Indications are derived from glucocorticoid toxicology and clinical use, not from a proving. Considered for: ill-effects and dependency following suppressive corticosteroid (cortisone/hydrocortisone) therapy; allergic states (hay fever, urticaria/hives, allergic skin eruptions); chronic inflammatory skin disease (eczema, dermatitis, psoriasis) — especially where conventional steroids were used and then withdrawn; joint pain, arthritis and muscle soreness; and conditions referable to adrenal/endocrine dysregulation. By toxicological analogy (Law of Similars) the remedy-state suggests: fluid and sodium retention with puffiness/oedema and weight gain, Cushingoid changes, fragile thin easily-bruised skin with poor wound healing, muscular weakness, and neuropsychiatric disturbance (insomnia, mood swings). NONE of these is a proving-derived keynote.

Worse (aggravation)

Not established by proving. No reliably sourced modalities of aggravation exist for this remedy; any cited are inferred and should be treated as provisional. (Reported worse from corticosteroid withdrawal in the clinical context of steroid dependency.)

Better (amelioration)

Not established by proving. No reliably sourced modalities of amelioration exist for this remedy.

Source & Nature

HYDROCORTISONUM is the homeopathic preparation of hydrocortisone, i.e. cortisol — the principal glucocorticoid hormone of the human adrenal cortex and its pharmaceutical form. It is a C21 pregnane steroid (C21H30O5, molecular weight 362.46, CAS 50-23-7, PubChem CID 5754). As a drug it is a short-acting glucocorticoid with mild mineralocorticoid activity, used worldwide as an oral, injectable and topical anti-inflammatory and immunosuppressant. It is the 11β-hydroxyl counterpart of cortisone, to which it is metabolically interconverted in the body.
