Melatoninum

N-Acetyl-5-methoxytryptamine (IUPAC: N-[2-(5-methoxy-1H-indol-3-yl)ethyl]acetamide) · Melatonin, Melatoninum, Pineal hormone, "sleep hormone"

Modern MM
A modern proving remedy of the pineal hormone, with a sphere of action centring on the sleep-wake axis, mood (anger, irritability, impatience), and cognition/language (memory weakness, word-hunting, dyslexic errors), alongside headache and a tendency to ecchymosis. Best regarded as a small remedy whose picture is drawn chiefly from a single formal proving plus the known hormonal/toxicological action.

Key symptoms

From the Aurum Project proving (Melatonin 6x), as reported in the public proving summary and the published abstract: anger and suppressed anger; impatience and irritability; dyslexia with mistakes in spelling and writing; forgetful of words while speaking ("word-hunting"); weakness of memory; headaches; ecchymosis of the eye. The marked theme was cognitive/language disturbance (dyslexic-type errors) more than the expected sleep symptoms. From the substance's known action (Law of Similars): drowsiness/sedation, vivid dreams and nightmares, headache, nausea.

Worse (aggravation)

Proving data on time/circumstance modalities are limited and were not established in the publicly available proving summary or abstract. The substance's pharmacology is associated with daytime grogginess/sedation when the natural dark-driven rhythm is disturbed. Modalities beyond this are not well established and should not be assumed.

Better (amelioration)

No reliable amelioration modalities were established by the proving; none should be invented.

Source & Nature

Melatoninum is prepared from melatonin (N-acetyl-5-methoxytryptamine), the principal indoleamine hormone of the pineal gland. It is synthesised from serotonin, itself derived from the amino acid tryptophan. Molecular formula C13H16N2O2; molecular weight 232.28; CAS 73-31-4; PubChem CID 896.

In the body melatonin is the chronobiotic 'darkness signal': its secretion rises at night and falls in light, governing the circadian sleep-wake rhythm via MT1/MT2 receptors. It is widely sold as an over-the-counter supplement and, in some countries, a prescription medicine for insomnia, jet lag and circadian rhythm disorders.
