Merc. iod. flav. is most appropriate for people who tend to alternate rapidly between depression and high spirits.

The classic symptom picture for Merc. iod.  flav. is of right-sided complaints, particularly throat infections with swollen glands and a coated tongue. If pharyngitis, tonsillitis, or ear infections affect the right side, Merc. iod. flav. is strongly indicated. Common symptoms include a sensation as if there is a lump in the throat, throat inflammation, and ulcerated patches in the throat that exude a cheeselike mucus. Sharp, throbbing pains may affect the right ear, becoming worse on swallowing.

Key symptoms

  • Throat affections with greatly swollen glands; worse on right side
  • Tongue coated thickly yellow at the base
  • Lacunar tonsillitis with cheesy exudates and offensive breath
  • Swelling begins on right side; symptoms travel from right to left
  • Constant inclination to swallow; sensation of a lump in throat
  • Mammary tumors with warm perspiration and gastric disturbances
  • Swollen, hard inguinal glands; syphilitic chancre with persistent induration

Worse (aggravation)

For cold, damp weather; at night; for gentle movement.

Better (amelioration)

For open air; for physical exertion; during the day.

There are sore throats that especially call for the proto-iodide.

When in sore throats the inflammation and pain predominantly affect the rightside, and there is a tendency to remain on the right side, or if the Merc. state is present and the sore throat goes from right to left, it is the proto-iodide you want.

The patient that needs this remedy for constitutional troubles will be worse during rest and from a warm room and better in the open air.

This is especially true when the patient needs Merc. prot. in neuritis of the right arm that comes on in writers.

The arm then is very painful when writing, from passive motion, from rubbing, from pressure, from both beat and cold, but better from walking in the open! air.
