Mercurius Protoiodatus is suited to scrofulous and syphilitic patients whose mucous surfaces are covered with squamous epithelium. The remedy has a medicine-of-concomitants quality, with pains appearing simultaneously in distant parts. It affects patients sensitive to cold damp weather and draughts while perspiring, with a tendency to right-sided affections that extend to the left.

Key symptoms

  • Thick dirty yellow coating at base of tongue; tip and edges red
  • Throat symptoms right-sided, worse from warm drinks and empty swallowing
  • Cervical and parotid glands enormously swollen
  • Tenacious mucus accumulating in throat difficult to dislodge
  • Teeth feel too long; irresistible desire to clench teeth in sleep
  • Nausea at sight of food; faint sick feeling in hypogastrium
  • Corneal ulcers looking as if chipped out by a finger-nail
  • Black stools
  • Pain in right forearm and left hip simultaneously

Worse (aggravation)

  • Night; before 1 a.m.; on waking
  • Rest
  • Lying on left side
  • Warm room; warmth of bed
  • Warm drinks (throat symptoms)
  • In spring
  • Writing (arm pain)
  • Touch and pressure

Better (amelioration)

  • Lying on right side (tired feeling relieved)
  • Mind and body actively engaged (headache relieved)
  • Pressing hand on liver region (stitching pain relieved)

Much accumulation of tenacious mucus in throat. Merc. iod. has a strong characteristic in the tongue─a thick yellow coat at the base; anterior part …
