Serotoninum

3-(2-Aminoethyl)-1H-indol-5-ol; 5-Hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) · Serotonin; 5-HT; Serotoninum (homeopathic). Prepared from serotonin hydrochloride.

Modern MM
A modern proving remedy whose sphere of action centres on connection versus disconnection — bonding, love and elation alternating with isolation, rejection and feeling unloved — mirrored physically by a striking thermal polarity ("icy fire": coldness and heat together) and by gastrointestinal disturbance. Mood oscillates rapidly between elevated, euphoric states and despondency.

Key symptoms

Polarity of connection and disconnection: loving feelings and elation — alternating with feeling rejected, isolated and disconnected. Mood like a "rollercoaster," swinging between elation and deep depression. Angelic imagery and delusions of angelic protection. Thermal polarity of "icy fire" — coldness and heat/burning together. Shooting, stabbing, tingling, pins-and-needles sensations; whooshing, wave-like sensations. Nausea and diarrhea. (All from the 2019 School of Homeopathy proving; small cohort — treat as provisional keynotes.)

Worse (aggravation)

Specific validated modalities are limited. The proving describes alternating thermal states (sensations of cold and of heat/burning occurring together or in succession). No reliable time/position aggravation has been established from a single small proving — formal modalities should not be over-stated.

Better (amelioration)

Not reliably established from the available proving data. The remedy picture emphasises amelioration of the mental state through connection and loving/elated feelings, but discrete physical ameliorating factors are not documented.

Source & Nature

Serotoninum is the homeopathic preparation of serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine, 5-HT), an endogenous monoamine neurotransmitter and tissue hormone. It is an indoleamine synthesised in the body from the amino acid tryptophan: molecular formula C10H12N2O, molecular weight 176.22 g/mol, CAS 50-67-9, PubChem CID 5202; IUPAC name 3-(2-aminoethyl)-1H-indol-5-ol.

In the living organism about 90% of serotonin is produced by enterochromaffin cells of the gut, roughly 8% is stored in blood platelets, and only 1–2% resides in the central nervous system. It regulates mood, cognition, sleep, appetite, thermoregulation, pain, gastrointestinal motility, vasoconstriction and platelet aggregation. It was first isolated and named in 1948 by Rapport, Green and Page.
