Thyroxinum

L-Thyroxine; Levothyroxine; 3,5,3',5'-tetraiodo-L-thyronine (T4). IUPAC: (2S)-2-amino-3-[4-(4-hydroxy-3,5-diiodophenoxy)-3,5-diiodophenyl]propanoic acid · Thyroxin, Thyroxine, T4, Levothyroxine. Closely related to and historically conflated with Thyroidinum (whole dried thyroid gland extract).

Modern MM
Sphere of action: the metabolic, endocrine and nutritional economy — growth, development, weight regulation — together with the heart (tachycardia, palpitation), nervous-muscular system (tremor, weakness) and skin (dry, psoriasis with adiposity). Bivalent in conception: addresses both states of thyroid excess (thyrotoxic picture, by similars) and thyroid deficiency (myxoedema, obesity, arrested development, by supplementation/organ-support).

Key symptoms

Emaciation with good or ravenous appetite ("great weakness and hunger, yet loses flesh"); rapid pulse, tachycardia, palpitation from least exertion; nervous tremor of face and limbs; sweating and heat with muscular weakness; exophthalmos with prominent eyeballs and dilated pupils; obesity and arrested development at the opposite pole; dry, impoverished skin, psoriasis associated with adiposity; chilliness with cold hands and feet. These keynotes derive from the toxicological/clinical action of thyroid hormone (Thyroidinum), applied to Thyroxinum as its isolated principle — NOT from a formal Hahnemannian proving of pure thyroxine.

Worse (aggravation)

Worse from least exertion (palpitation, weakness); cold (subjects are chilly, hands and feet cold in the deficiency picture); riding/motion (nausea); at night (itching of skin). [Modalities reported under Thyroidinum in Boericke; not from a dedicated thyroxine proving.]

Better (amelioration)

Few well-defined ameliorations are recorded. Boericke notes the remedy acts better in pale patients than in those of high colour. [Sourced from Thyroidinum, not a thyroxine proving.]

Source & Nature

Thyroxinum is the homeopathic preparation of thyroxine (T4), the principal hormone of the thyroid gland and the isolated "active principle" of the older whole-gland remedy Thyroidinum. It is an iodinated amino-acid derivative (an iodothyronine), molecular formula C15H11I4NO4, molecular weight about 776.87, CAS 51-48-9, PubChem CID 5819. The synthetic levothyroxine sodium form is among the most widely prescribed conventional drugs for hypothyroidism, making Thyroxinum a drug/commercial-substance remedy whose homeopathic indications mirror the known endocrine action of T4.
