Source & Nature
VANCOMYCINUM is the potentised preparation of vancomycin, a tricyclic glycopeptide antibiotic (C66H75Cl2N9O24, MW ~1449 g/mol, CAS 1404-90-6, PubChem CID 14969). Vancomycin was first reported in 1955 by Eli Lilly from a strain of the soil actinomycete now named Amycolatopsis orientalis (originally Streptomyces orientalis), and approved by the FDA in 1958. In conventional medicine it is a Gram-positive antibiotic of last resort, used intravenously for MRSA and serious staphylococcal/enterococcal infection and orally for Clostridioides difficile colitis. It acts by binding the D-Ala-D-Ala terminus of bacterial cell-wall precursors.
