Source & Nature
Oxytocinum is a homeopathic sarcode prepared from oxytocin, a nine-amino-acid neuropeptide hormone (sequence CYIQNCPLG, disulfide bridge 1-6) synthesised in the hypothalamus and released from the posterior pituitary. Molecular formula C43H66N12O12S2, molecular weight ~1007 g/mol, CAS 50-56-6, PubChem CID 439302.
Physiologically it produces two signature actions: rhythmic uterine contraction and the milk-ejection (let-down) reflex; centrally it is associated with attachment, trust, maternal behaviour and anxiety modulation. In homeopathy it is used within the matridonal or "gifts of the mother" group — remedies prepared from substances of human reproduction. Melissa Assilem's original matridonal family is Lac humanum, Folliculinum, Placenta humana, Vernix caseosa, Amniotic fluid and Umbilical cord; Oxytocin is a later addition to this circle of remedies.
